North Strand Helping Hands

The goal of the North Strand Helping Hand (NSHH) is to provide a helping hand, not a handout, to our unemployed, senior citizen, working poor, homeless, and potentially homeless neighbors.

Their primary mission is to serve as an emergency crisis center to provide food, utility assistance, and clothing to our neighbors in need. As a member agency of the Low Country Food bank, they are open at their facility for food assistance five days a week. In addition, they provide "staples" once a month and holiday meals for 80 homebound senior citizens in our community. At back-to-school time, they give children gift cards to a local shoe store to purchase tennis shoes. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, they provide holiday meals to seniors and families in need and toys to children. In 2011, NSHH provided assistance to more than 19,000 local individuals. One step, at a time, they are working to ease the pain of hunger in our community.

NSHH depends on volunteers to carry out their mission, and there is an ongoing need for them. For information on volunteer opportunities, please contact Margaret Owen or Lorraine Martin at 843-399-0862. www.northstrandhelpinghand.org
